Interspecies interactions mediated by conductive minerals in the sediments of the iron rich meromictic Lake La Cruz, Spain
2019
Interspecies interactions mediated by conductive minerals in the sediments of the ferruginous Lake La Cruz, Spain
2018
AbstractLake La Cruz is considered a biogeochemical analogue to early Earth marine environments because its water column is depleted in sulfate, but rich in methane and iron, similar to conditions envisaged for much of the Precambrian. In this early Earth analogue environment, we show that conductive particles establish a tight metabolic coupling between electroactive microbial clades. We propose that mineral-based syntrophy is of potential relevance for the evolution of Earth’s earliest complex life forms. We show that the anoxic sediment of Lake La Cruz, which is rich in biogeochemically ‘reactive’ iron minerals, harbors known electroactive species such asGeobacterandMethanothrix,in addit…
Single and competitive adsorption of Cd and Zn onto a granular activated carbon
1996
Single and competitive adsorption of cadmium and zinc onto granular activated carbon DARCO 12–20 mesh has been investigated. This activated carbon has been shown as an effective adsorbent for both metals. Cadmium and zinc removals increased with pH and decreased with molar metal/carbon ratio. Surface precipitation phenomena have been detected for the higher pHs and molar ratios. The adsorption process has been modelled on the surface complexation Triple Layer Model (TLM). For this purpose, the amphoteric nature of the activated carbon has been studied. Single metal adsorption data have been used to calibrate TLM parameters. A dependence of the adsorption constants on pH and molar metal/carb…
Biomass-based composite catalysts for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of bisphenol A:preparation and characterization studies
2019
The wet granulation process was used to prepare new, efficient, and cost-effective granular biomass-based composite catalysts for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of bisphenol A (BPA). The most stable composite granules was prepared by mixing biomass-based carbon residue (CR) with metakaolin (MK) combined with calcium oxide (CaO) or cement and a solvent (NaOH or KOH). For all the prepared composite granules, the optimized binding agents to carbon ratio was 0.3, the solvent to carbon ratio 1.2, and the agitation rate 1200 rpm. The specific surface area of the prepared catalysts was 152–205 m2/g. The composite granular catalyst (CR + MK + CaO + NaOH) had the most durable and stable str…
